Life is hectic enough. As you step outside of your bubble, new information can add to stress – at least in the short term.  Since the weekend is now upon us, I’d like to share with you a couple of tips on how to relax.

These come from a recent post by Michael Hyatt. Of the seven tips he listed, #4 and #7 are those I want to comment on today. They are relevant to what I have been recently writing and podcasting about.

On Hyatt’s list, #4 is learning. It has been said that “Information is power.”  If we want to understand that in a positive context, I would tweak that a bit and say “Factual information is power.” Stepping out into new areas and seeking truth exposes you to a lot of new information. In today’s internet world, much of what is presented as truth is in fact false information.

If you don’t catch the lie, then the “power” it creates is full of darkness rather than light.  It will bring fear, confusion, and doubt, rather than peace.  Learning alleviates stress if what you learn puts you in a position to deal with life based on a foundation of truth. Be discerning in what you learn, but don’t let that stop you from stepping out! The better your understanding of reality, the more peaceful your life will become.

#7 on Hyatt’s list is gratitude. Stress can only survive in an environment of negativity. Let me say that another way. Negativity is the darkness in which stress thrives. And gratitude is a source of bright light, shining into the dark corners of our minds where negativity hides.

Today is my oldest daughter’s 19th birthday. She is becoming a fine young woman and a great writer herself. Sunday my oldest son’s 8th birthday. God has blessed him with the gift of perception and curiosity! The Tjaden home has a great deal to be thankful for. As Scripture says, “To whom much has been given, much has been required.”  The first thing you and I can give back is gratitude to the One who has given us much.

Please share in the comments below ways that you find to relax. We’d love to hear them!

Have a great weekend.
